Evolution of Cloud: As the internet evolved and companies like Amazon, Google, Facebook started becoming big based on users traffic they had to invest more and more on hardware, software and their data centers started expanding and becoming more globalized to keep with uptime and user traffic.
Then a revolution happened with virtualization so not everything had to be physical and that made the hosting cheaper, now you could run multiple servers on 1 Physical server.
Then came automated provisioning of the infrastructure (Servers) and software (OS, Software deployment on servers).
This was final culmination of the cloud platforms which we know today as Infrastructure as service, PaaS – Platform as Service, DBaaS – Database as Service
SaaS – Software as a Service is what it is known has already existed for quite sometime but was never cheaper than it is today. It is an Application which is hosted on a provider platform and maintained by the provider. e.g. HCM – Human Capital Management which is about managing your Employees or Non-Employees HR, Payroll, Benefits, Absence etc record in a system.
With the Evolution of Cloud, SaaS has become the more reliable, cheaper, secure option for Enterprise. More and more business are adopting it whether they are big or small. This takes out headache of maintaining all the Hardware, software, Software versions, compatibility, labor involved, IT support cost etc. for the Enterprise.
On-Prem – On Premise is the traditional way of hosting all the Hardware, software, Software versions, compatibility, labor involved, IT support done by an Organization in their own data center.
